About the studio

Studio Ingegnaria Strutturale Massetti was founded in 1980 by the current owner, Ing. Gian Ermes Massetti, shortly after graduating from Milan Polytechnic in Civil Engineering - Structural Section with a specialization in Earthquake Engineering (Thesis: Consolidation works for residential buildings and industrial buildings in the seismic area of the 1976 Friuli earthquake - Prof. Migliacci).

The firm has been operating for 37 years, mainly in the fields of analysis, structural design, and construction supervision, both in the public and private sectors. We deal mainly with the calculation and drafting of executive projects using reinforced concrete, steel, wood, and masonry, the consolidation of historic buildings (such as churches), and the seismic adaptation of industrial buildings.

We've gained much valuable experience over the years, consolidating our skill for three-dimensional structural modelling through specialising in methods of static consolidation and the seismic improvement of historic buildings. We have obtained the certification BS EN ISO 9001: 2000 N.AJA06 / 10395 for the design of industrial and civic buildings, consolidation of buildings subject to protection and bound by the Superintendency for Architectural Heritage, and structural design of earthquake-proof buildings and works management.

Massetti has always kept in contact with academia, through periodic refresher courses, networks, and direct collaborations with university professors, in order to maintain a scientific component to each project. This openness to academia and new developments has become a characteristic feature of Studio Ingegneria Massett.

Our previous collaborations with academia have included the drafting of restoration and structural consolidation projects with Prof. G. Grimoldi (Milan Polytechnic) on the Pallavicino Palace and Realdo Colombo School in CR and investigations, diagnostics, and consolidation with Prof. Binda Maier, Prof. Gentile, and Prof. L. Zanzi (Milan Polytechnic) for the Basilica of S. Lorenzo in Cremona.

We worked with Prof. Luigia Binda Maier, international specialist and scholar in the field of structural consolidation of historic buildings, from 2005 until his death in December 2016. This was a long and fruitful professional relationship that allowed us to grow as scientific technicians in the field of surveys and consolidation. Our academic publications have included:

The Basilica of S. Lorenzo in Cremona: Structural Investigation and Monitoring in St. Louis - University Of Missouri - 2007- 10th North American Mansory Conference.A. ANZANI- L. BINDA- L. CANTINI- G. CARDANI- P. CONDOLEO- G.E. MASSETTI

Investigation, Diagnosis and Conservation of Draw Church of St. Lawrence in Cremona: Location Conferent -Rome -2008 L. BINDA- G. CARDANI- C. GENTILE- G.E. MASSETTI- L. ZANZI
Currently, Massetti works with Prof. Giuliana Cardani, a former student of Prof. Binda and now a competent researcher and teacher at Milan Polytechnic. He specialises in Diagnostic and Technical Analysis of Recovery in the drafting of structural projects and in audits and investigations, such as scientific consultants. We also work with Prof. Luigi Zanzi, Professor of Applied Geophysics at Milan Polytechnic, on non-destructive investigations using ultrasound and geo-radar.

Since 2005, we have collaborated with the working group of the Department of Structural Engineering at Milan Polytechnic for diagnostic analysis and for materials surveys (C. Tedeschi, C. Tiraboschi, M. Cucchi, M. Antico). The connections forged by the working group (professional activity - research - scientific advice) allows considerable flexibility in the technical, scientific, and operational fields, with excellent results naturally following. Teamwork guarantees punctuality in relation to research, tests, and analysis to be carried out. By interpreting the data provided by an evolutionary study of crack patterns and investigating materials together, the group has created a novel approach to complex issues, finding the right balance between university research and professional activities.

A current collaboration with Prof. Giuliana Cardani investigates the drafting of structural projects and investigations from scientific consultants. The study is one of the founder projects of "re-load", a young multi-disciplinary network of professionals born and based in Brescia, established to find new ways to fully satisfy the needs of each client in regards to feasibility, design, and realisation of any project.

Over time the study has yielded further knowledge in the following sectors:
  • Seismic structural design
  • Consolidation of bound monumental buildings
  • Diagnostic investigations and structural monitoring
  • Structural analysis
  • Design of structures from reinforced concrete, steel, wood, and masonry
  • Design of civil and industrial buildings
  • Renovation of civil buildings
  • Restructuring of assisted health residences
  • Direction of works in public and private areas
  • Static tests
  • Appraisals and legal technical advice

Our founder, Gian Ermes Massetti

Gian Ermes holds a Master's Degree in Civil Construction Engineering - Structural Section from the Faculty of Engineering at Milan Polytechnic (1980), with a Specialization in Earthquake Engineering. As the owner of Studio Ingegnaria Strutturale Massetti since 1980, he's certified with quality system BS EN ISO 9001: 2008 N. AJAEU / 09/11515 for the design of industrial and civil buildings, consolidation of buildings bound by the Superintendency for Architectural Heritage, structural design of anti-seismic buildings, and construction supervision. Massetti has consolidated his decades of experience in analysis and structural modelling through scientific publications. His studio has acquired excellent skills in the design and supervision of works in the following sectors:
  • SEISMIC STRUCTURAL DESIGN
  • CONSOLIDATION OF MONUMENTAL BUILDINGS
  • DIAGNOSTIC INVESTIGATIONS AND STRUCTURAL MONITORING
  • STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS
  • STRUCTURE DESIGN IN STEEL, WOOD, AND MASONRY
  • DESIGN OF CIVIL AND INDUSTRIAL BUILDINGS
  • RESTRUCTURING OF CIVIL BUILDINGS
  • WORKS DIRECTION (PUBLIC AND PRIVATE FIELD)
  • STATIC TESTING AND LEGAL TECHNICAL CONSULTANCY EXPERTISE
Massetti has collaborated with university professors for the drafting of restoration and structural consolidation projects, including Prof. G. Grimoldi (Milan Polytechnic) on Pallavicino Palace and Realdo Colombo School in CR and with Prof. Binda Maier, Prof. Gentile, and Prof. L. Zanzi (Milan Polytechnic) on investigations, diagnostics, and the consolidation of the Basilica of S. Lorenzo in Cremona.

The firm is one of the founders of "re-load", a network of young professionals based in Brescia, created to fully meet the needs of each client in terms of feasibility, design, and realization of any project. The various skills and knowledge of the working group (professional activity - research - scientific advice-execution) allows for considerable flexibility in the scientific and operative technical field, providing excellent ideas for planned interventions and guaranteeing adequate timing in relation to research, tests, and analysis to be carried out.

Massetti is also the co-founder and coordinator of "Cremona Seismic Group", based in Cremona and working in collaboration with RAVARA spa (CR) to satisfy the needs of clients through high-performance and cost-effective solutions, both in terms of seismic and energy security.
